The victory of Biden and Harris represents the victory of democracy, truth and science over obscurantism, hate speech and the fake news industry that destroys democracy itself and its institutions

The election of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris confirms that the winds of progressive renewal continue in America, which began with the renewal of the governments of Mexico and Argentina, the restoration of democracy in Bolivia, and the recent advance of the constituent process in Chile. The victory of Biden and Harris represents the victory of democracy, truth and science over obscurantism, hate speech and the fake news industry that destroys democracy itself and its institutions. The strong support of Afro-descendants, Latinos, women, and youth for Biden and Harris raises expectations that the United States will advance in the field of social inclusion, fighting structural racism and patriarchy, fighting inequality, and addressing the pandemic and climate change. For this reason, the region wants the new President’s government’s Agenda to include issues of vital hemispheric interest such as the re-entry of the United States into the Paris Conventions to combat global warming, the suspension of discriminatory treatment of Latino migrants, including the wall in Mexico, the return of the United States to the World Health Organization (WHO) with its support for our initiative to make the vaccine against Covid-19 freely accessible to all, the suspension of the inhuman economic blockades against Cuba and Venezuela and the support for the sustainability of the peace accords in Colombia. The region also demands, as Pope Francis has requested, a peaceful, democratic and negotiated solution to the crisis in Venezuela. Additionally, the United States’ relations with the countries of the region are strengthened, within the framework of respect for democracy and popular sovereignty, the search for egalitarian and inclusive societies, cooperation for sustainable development, the defense of peace, life and multilateral institutions, the search for a symmetrical and multipolar world order and the preservation of the state sovereignty of the peoples. We hope that Joe Biden’s government will be fully successful and we state that the Grupo de Puebla will use all the channels of dialogue and tolerance that are reopened today with the election of President Biden to reestablish a framework of relations with his next government based on tolerance. dialogue and respect for the principle of non-intervention in the internal affairs of nations
